We owe you an apology. There was no newsletter last week, and this one was supposed to land Thursday. Election season keeps every newsroom running hard, and when you’re a small team without a lot of resources, something has to give. Last week, it was this newsletter. We’re back now.
Two weeks ago I ended this newsletter with a promise. We were taking the BUHE working group to a rage room, and I’d come back and tell you what broke.
A lot broke. Plates, cups, bottles, some old electronics. But the thing that’s stuck with me since then came from Kate, one of the six of us in the working group.
Kate was one of Ethiopique’s first major individual donors. She found out about our work through our neighborhood block adoption and has been one of our most consistent supporters ever since. She comes out to our cleanups, and she serves on Ethiopique’s advisory committee. When I asked her to join, she said yes pretty much right away.
