For almost three years I exited onto Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue once or twice a week. I was coming south on I-295 from East DC, getting off at Kenilworth, driving about a mile down Burroughs and then turning right toward Benning Road. I was a resident service coordinator for National Housing Trust, covering as many as three properties at a time, connecting residents to whatever they needed — referrals, services, somebody to pick up the phone for them.

One of those properties was Copeland Manor. It was the only co-op in my portfolio. The tenants weren’t just tenants; they were owners, and they sat down regularly with property management to decide about parking, security, dumpsters, maintenance, all of it. I watched that happen for three years.
